Plain Language Certificate - Online - April 14 to May 12 (2020)  (back)

Please get approval from your supervisor before registering for this online certificate course.

Have you ever wanted to get your message across faster? Have you wanted to feel more confident that people understood you correctly–the first time? Using Plain Language may be the answer! This online training introduces strategies on word choice, font selection, grammar use, organization of content, formatting, “teach-back,” and more to help you develop a toolkit of techniques to communicate more effectively. Learn how people across campus—and across the globe—rely on Plain Language strategies to save time, money, work, and frustration by promoting better understanding and customer satisfaction.

• Communicate the benefits of using Plain Language in the workplace.
• Identify written Plain Language strategies to communicate effectively with native and nonnative English speakers.
• Identify verbal strategies to communicate effectively with native and nonnative English speakers.
• Use Plain Language writing strategies to edit existing text for improved readability.
• Explore Plain Language strategies in organizing, word choice, grammar, formatting, and layout to create effective and easy-to-read documents.

This online course runs for 4 weeks (April 14 - May 12).

In this 4-week online training, you will:
• complete 4 modules (1 module each week)
• be assigned to a small group
• complete group discussion assignments (usually due Tuesdays and Fridays)
• spend about 2 hours per week on coursework

*You work through modules independently, but you must submit group discussion assignments by their due dates (usually Tuesday and Friday).

Participating in this online training is the equivalent of attending the 3-part in-person series:

• Introduction to Plain Language,
• Write with Plain Language, and
• Design for Plain Language.

If you complete the online Plain Language training, you will receive the Plain Language series certificate.
