As part of our continuing efforts to better support and prepare department chairs, we have developed what we’re calling the ‘new chair boot camp,’ a three-day seminar in late summer designed to provide new chairs and directors a course that covers some of the crucial aspects of the work involved in leading a department or academic center. Along with information on what they’ll need to prepare to do up front, such as how to adjust to the job’s rhythms, and how to work effectively with staff, the seminar will also include sessions on budgets, fundraising, and governance, among other topics.
