Research on writing across the disciplines shows that instructors can enhance student learning and engagement by designing and implementing an interactive writing process. This workshop outlines concrete strategies for two important activities in this process: (1) one-to-one conferencing and (2) peer review. We’ll discuss how to prepare for both activities and highlight best practices for helping students develop their ideas, identify areas for improvement, and plan for revision of their drafts. We will explore other possible approaches in the interactive writing process, such as assigning writers’ memos to encourage critical and reflective thinking about written feedback on earlier drafts. Finally, we’ll look at successful models from across the university.
