Gathering Business Requirements  (back)
 
Description:
This two day course (November 10 and 11, 2015) is designed especially for UW-Madison to help those involved in or responsible for gathering requirements for the multitude of current campus projects/initiatives. This course is sponsored and funded by the University of Wisconsin-Madison - CIO Office and is being offered at no charge to the campus community in recognition of the importance of this work.

In recognition of the increased complexity of our campus projects and the ever increasing skill levels of our business analysts, this course has been refined and enhanced to enrich the learning experience and better prepare attendees for the challenges of gathering, documenting, and prioritizing requirements.

Day One - Foundation Topics:

  • Effects of poorly described or incomplete requirements

  • Stakeholder identification and prioritization

  • Visual tools to help gather requirements

  • Facilitating interview sessions

  • Handling difficult dialog - "Crucial Conversations"

  • Creating rich questions/using step ladder interviewing

  • Categorizing requirements with affinity diagrams

  • Group decision making techniques


Day Two - Advanced Topics:

  • Using decision matrices to manage large volumes of requirements

  • Communicating requirements through scenarios and storyboarding

  • Prioritizing requirements using QFD

  • Developing user stories and use cases

  • The role of requirements in iterative/Agile as well as waterfall development

  • Creating non-functional requirements

  • Requirement traceability and testing

  • Using requirements gathering to help with organizational change management

  • Communicating for buy-in

  • Tips on avoiding pitfalls

Scott Converse is the Director of Project Management and Process Improvement programs for the University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Business.
