Years of training and thousands of hours of clinical experience allow physicians, PAs, etc. to diagnosis simple and complex pathology in moments. Providers are expected to get the right answer. However, the reality of medical practice tends to be messy. Patient's with clear diagnoses may refuse treatment, lie or mislead. Hospital policy or resources may interfere with the best treatment option. How clinicians navigate these difficult decisions creates the difference between knowing the right answer and being a great physician.
The EPPA Scribe Program will host a clinical ethics workshop using real case studies from their clinic and emergency medicine practices. The goal of the workshop is to provide attendees with a window into day to day clinical decision making and utilize a tool for thinking about clinical situations where ethical dilemmas may be present.
The workshop is geared towards students interested in pursuing a career in health care, e.g. medicine, PA, etc. However, all students are welcome to attend.
The EPPA Scribe Program hires students and recent graduates interested in careers in medicine. Scribes work 1:1 with physicians and PAs in hospitals and clinics. They accompany providers into each patient encounter and gain an intimate understanding of what medicine looks like at the bedside. Scribes manage medical documentation and by doing so, they help physicians provide more attentive and rapid care to patients.
