Establishing and Sustaining Communities of Practice (new in '15-'16)  (back)

Description:
Communities of practice (CoPs) and other professional learning communities are becoming essential elements of our professional development pathways. In contrast to workshops and courses, CoPs are largely guided by the members, organized and sustained by peer in service to one another. At UW-Madison, there are now dozens of these groups, and they serve a wide range of audiences and needs.

Have you considered getting involved in a community of practice, but didn’t know where to begin?
Are you the leader or convener of such a learning community, but have wanted to learn more about their principles of design?
Have you been involved in a community of practice (CoP)and have wondered why they are successful?

This two-part, 5 hour workshop will help you answer these questions. Offered by Harry Webne-Behrman (Training Coordinator, Learning & Talent Development/OHR) and Katherine Loving (Manager, Campus Community Partnerships/UHS) through the UW-Madison Community of Practice Network, this workshop is a resource to those seeking to learn about CoPs and their potential to enhance institutional engagement and learning. Participants will learn the principles of CoP design, ‘best practices’ in their implementation, and examples of successful CoP efforts at UW-Madison. In addition, they will be able to consult with instructors and peers regarding specific challenges they face in starting and sustaining efforts in which they are engaged.

This is a new class, and it will be offered on October 1st and 15th for the first time. Resources are still being compiled and specific lesson plans will be developed through summer 2015… look for more information in the next few weeks!
