Job Summary:
The Department of Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics (NEEP) in the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks candidates for one tenure-track faculty position in fusion technology. Exceptional candidates in all disciplines that will contribute to delivery of fusion energy systems from the developing physics basis are encouraged to apply. Candidates who are able to transfer experience from nuclear fission system design and analysis to fusion technology will be considered.
The Department is reinvesting in its long-term strategic priority of fusion technology. While strong candidates in all relevant areas will be considered, particular areas of interest include:
*Development of neutron sources and irradiation experiments (including the UW Nuclear Reactor and the development of new fusion neutron source facilities) to support a wide array of fusion technology needs including nuclear data validation, material and component performance testing and radiation hardening;
*Fusion blanket design and analysis, including tritium management, thermal design & analysis, risk analysis and safety analysis;
*Fusion system design studies that integrate and optimize across many technology objectives and constraints.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching in these, or related areas where expertise is transferable to fusion, such as nuclear fission systems and low-temperature plasma.
The newly hired faculty members will have a tenure home in the Department of Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics. They will join the multi-department fusion energy research community at UW-Madison. They will also be welcome to participate in the Institute for Nuclear Energy Systems with diverse research interests related to nuclear energy applications and the Just Fusion collaboration. There will be many opportunities to establish collaborations with experimental, theoretical and computational research groups on the UW campus, and with national and international fusion efforts. Faculty members are expected to establish and maintain world-class graduate research programs, teach courses, contribute to the education and professional development of a diverse community of undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in department, college, university, and appropriate community and professional service activities.
Responsibilities:
Teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses; supervising graduate student research; developing and directing a strong, funded research program; promoting an inclusive environment for learning and research; participating in departmental and university faculty governance; and contributing to professional and public service.
