Wisconsin takes third at Big Ten rowing championships

Badgers extend streak to nine-straight, top-three team finishes

INDIANAPOLIS – No. 13 Wisconsin women's rowing equaled its seeding in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four events and used its depth to secure a third-place finish at the 2018 Big Ten Rowing Championships on Sunday. The result gave UW its ninth-consecutive, top-three team finish at the event.

Racing took place at Eagle Creek Park over 2000 meters.

In the three events that row in NCAA championships, UW placed fourth in each, and finished the day with 118 team points, seven better than fourth-place Iowa. Ohio State captured its sixth consecutive Big Ten title to become the first school to win all seven events, and scored 192 points along the way. Michigan was second with 163 points.

In a hotly contested varsity eight, the Badgers were fourth behind fourth-ranked Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan and No. 8 Iowa. Iowa took an early lead, but Ohio State pushed past the upstarts, then Michigan passed them as well. While that was going on, the Badgers and Indiana went back and forth for the first half 1200 meters, before Wisconsin took control and the fourth spot.

The Badgers were fourth behind those same three crews in the second varsity eight.

In the varsity four, UW took fourth behind Ohio State, surprise Minnesota and Michigan, respectively.

The Badgers reached the podium in the second novice eight with a third-place result, the best finish of any UW crew on the day.

In the remaining boats, UW took fourth in the second varsity four, while its novice eight and third varsity four placed fifth.

The 2018 Big Ten Rowing Championships will air tape-delayed on Sunday, May 20, at 10 a.m. CT on BTN.

Three Badgers were recognized for their season, including senior Lexi Siverling (Cadott, Wisconsin), who was named to the 2018 All-Big Ten First Team. She was joined on the 2018 All-Big Ten Second Team by fellow senior Megan Whitehouse (Muskego, Wisconsin).

Senior Monica Gerber (San Rafael, California) was named UW's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

On the Badgers' performance
"For the Badgers, we had a solid day. I think everybody raced up to their capability for today, so we are really proud of them. I think everybody is happy.

"Congratulations to our second freshmen eight for getting up on the podium. We are really looking forward to the next couple of weeks getting ready for NCAAs. We know we've got more speed to find and actually bring out. We know it is there.

"We are looking forward to continuing to represent the Badgers and see what we can do for our school and our conference."

On the racing conditions
"Indy gave us really nice racing conditions. It was little bit choppy from a crosswind, but overall we definitely beat the forecast today so that was fantastic."

On the Big Ten and Ohio State's performance
"Hats off to Ohio State. Not only did they win their sixth (consecutive) championship, but they won every single event and that is historic. That has never happened before. They were obviously the class of the field and I am honored to be coaching with the other coaches in the Big Ten as part of this strong conference."
