Leadership, Reflection, and Change  (back)

Description:
People and organizations are stretched to the very edge of their capacity where many things can seem stalled out: our ability to cope, to lead change, to decide whether to leave or stay. What provides hope in such a challenging time?

We can turn to each other (to use the words of Margaret Wheatley) and we can enhance our own sense of wholeness, not as a matter of feel-good anodyne, but as a necessity for our own health and the health and productivity of our workplaces.

In this provocative workshop, Dan Oestreich will share transitional methods toward a bright future.

1. How to move from fear- to a trust-based leadership style.
2. How to accelerate your own unique path of personal development as a leader, mentor and guide.
3. How to apply the nature of your own personal growth to the work of initiating and leading organizational change.

Along the way, Dan will provide insights from twenty years’ experience with “Driving Fear Out of the Workplace,” the 1990 book that started his own leadership consulting career. He will help participants assess the personal blind spots linked to often unconscious defensive behaviors, and he will help awaken the opportunities for positive growth by focusing on the balance of four closely related forms of personal power: self-affirmation, service, ethical choices, and trust.

Finally, he will help participants evaluate ways to modify organizational change efforts beyond the standard “waterfall” top-down models that so often fail. The emphasis is on integrating personal transformation with organizational transformation, making sure that the way work and systems are changed reflects a positive overall culture change, as well.

Methods include small group discussions, personal exercises, and case studies. A comprehensive hand-out will be provided.

Registration opens at 8:00 a.m.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Sponsored by the Office of Human Resource Development and the Wisconsin Center for Performance Excellence.
