Wisconsin suffers first loss of season to Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH - The Wisconsin wrestling squad suffered its first dual loss of the season, 25-9, to Pittsburgh on the road.

The Badgers previously shut out UW-Whitewater by a lopsided 43-0 score on November 12 at the UW Field House.

The Badgers (1-1) fell in the first four bouts to give Pittsburgh an early 15-0 lead until junior Rylan Lubeck stopped the Panthers' streak with a 3-1 decision at 149 pounds.

After two periods with goose eggs on the board, Lubeck took a 2-0 lead with a last-minute takedown. Lubeck surrendered an escape point to Lee but the junior had racked up plenty of riding time to clinch a 3-1 decision. He is now 9-7 this season.

Although Wisconsin was docked with its first blemish of the season on Saturday, Isaac Jordan maintained his perfect record, narrowly defeating Cody Wierioch in the 165-pound match.

With the team down 18-3, No. 3 Isaac Jordan stepped onto the mat with a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations but he had no problem handling them. Jordan used a late takedown in the first period to go up 2-0. Cody Wierioch answered with a takedown of his own in the second period but Jordan escaped for a 3-2 advantage going into the final period. Jordan eventually squeaked out a close 4-3 victory over Weirioch to continue his spotless 12-match winning streak.

Ryan Christensen earned Wisconsin's third win by edging out Zach Bruce in the 184-pound match. Going into the third period, Christensen led, 1-0, but earned another point to finish out the match with a 2-0 decision.

The win gave him double-digit wins on the season, as he joined Jordan and Hunter Ritter (unattached) as the only other Badgers with 10 wins or more. Christensen is now 10-7 on the season.

After starting out strong with plenty of nearfall points, UW sophomore Johnny Jimenez (125) let a 7-2 advantage slip away from him as Lorenzo Bently notched three takedowns to bounce back and force overtime. Bentley rallied to come out on top 14-12 in sudden victory.

Pitts' Ronnie Garbinsky and Wisconsin junior TJ Ruschell (157) wrestled a tight match all the way through. Garbinsky held a 3-0 advantage with only one minute remaining until Ruschell brought out a big reversal with just seconds left on the clock but was overcome by a 4-2 decision from Garbinsky.

The first bout of the day saw senior Brock Horwath (HWT) pinned at 1:29 by No. 12-ranked Ryan Solomon to give Pittsburgh an early 6-0 lead.

In a much-anticipated return, fourth-ranked Ryan Taylor did not see the opening results that he wanted as he lost by a 10-6 decision to No. 19 Dom Forys at 133 pounds. It was the only bout to feature two ranked wrestlers.

Luke Rowh fell in a 9-4 decision to No. 9 Mike Racciato in the 141-pound match, while 16th-ranked 174-pounder, Ricky Robertson, lost 13-5 to TeShan Cambell. The loss was Robertson's fifth of the year and first by major decision. He is 9-5 on the year.

At 197 pounds, Eric Peissig was unable to overcome Nick Bonaccorsi in a close 5-3 decision.

Wisconsin will wrap up its weekend slate on Sunday, as the Badgers open Big Ten competition against Penn State at Noon (CT).
